Northern Africa, the land of the baking sun shining over the windy sand dunes, became the lair of the theater of operations during WWII. Its most massive and stiffest battle was Second Battle of El Alamein, which took place October 23 – November 4, 1942 in El Alamein, a town lying 106 kilometres (66 mi) west of Alexandria and 240 kilometres (149 mi) northwest of Cairo.
That time Allied forces broke the Axis line and forced them all the way back to Tunisia. The battle marked a major turning point in the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, when Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery took command of the British Eighth Army from General Claude Auchinleck in August 1942 and the Allied victory turned the tide in the North African Campaign. It ended Axis hopes of occupying Egypt, taking control of the Suez Canal, and gaining access to the Middle Eastern oil fields.
Further, Winston Churchill said of that victory: "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." And after the war, he wrote: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat."
World of Tanks is pleased to announce the special to be held this weekend in commemoration of the Allies' noble deeds at El Alamein those days. So stay tuned for more details about the offers and see you on the battlefields!
